Hi friends,
just thought i'd update you on what the outcome was for my pooly mum. The MRI scan has now comfirmed she has avascular necrosis (AN), which in short is a disease that results from loss of blood supply to the bone (in her case it's her knee) which has caused the bone sadly to die. She is to have an infusion next week at the day hospital, not sure what the infusion is as we just couldn't take it all in and to be honest i didn't fully understand. Then she is to see the ortherpedic surgeon to discuss whether they are going to remove the dead bone or what! They still have no idea why this has happened as usually it occurs when there is injury to the bone or long term steroid use which my mum has had neither so it's all a bit confusion really!

Has anyone else had this or know someone who has had this before?
Thanks
emilyXXX.

Hi Emily

A member of my family has this problem but I believe it is quite rare.

His problem is in his wrist (but quite possibly other places too) where the whole carpal architecture had disintegrated. Unfortunately this is due to long term alcohol abuse (a common cause) but sadly a similar outcome. His wrist was operated on about 12 months ago with a fairly good result considering the very severe damage. He now has some function back in the wrist, but quite limited. That said, truly amazing things can now be done in orthopaedics so I'm sure your mum is in very capable hands. Hope they are able to find the cause of the problem quickly and she is able to get some satisfactory treatment which will help to improve her quality of life.

Please pass on my good wishes to your Mum,

Lyn x

Thanks everyone for you lovely comments/replies,
they still haven't got to the bottom of this and have admitted being baffled themselves as to why it has iand is happening. They think the avasular necrosis might be affecting the other knee now which is very bad news for my poor mum. Am now going to post of the surgery forum as that's the next step.
Thanks again friends.
